Those of you that have found a way to obtain v.4.5 and are using DTG for BB, are you on BES or BIS? Will DTG work with BIS Units?

So does this mean that the long awaited 4.5 OS will be released?

    BES/BIS Updates?

Documents To Go will have full support for BIS users if/when RIM offers up a BIS update (BIS will need to be updated just like BES in order to have all of the Documents To Go functionality). I wouldn't expect to see separate versions for BIS and BES users.

From the Documents To Go FAQ: "...to use Documents To Go to view and edit e-mail attachments, your organization must be running BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 4.1.5 or an updated version of BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). If you do not have the latest updates of BES/BIS, you can still use Documents To Go to view and edit files stored locally on your smartphone or on a media card."

The Premium Edition will be available for purchase next month. The version that's part of OS 4.5 has support for Word and PowerPoint with Excel support coming in an update later this year (info from a RIM press release).

If you don't have a BES/BIS update available, you should still be able to use Documents To Go if you sideload documents with an SD card or sync files from your desktop to your BB. Not ideal but better than nothing until you have an update that will let you view/edit attachments.

New from DataViz' BB product page:

"Great news! DataViz will be launching Documents To Go Premium Edition in June 2008. Anyone currently signed up on the announce list will be notified via e-mail the moment it is available. If you are not signed up, please do so below."

    And this:

"RIM recently announced several new planned messaging and collaboration enhancements to their BlackBerry Enterprise Platform. One of them being support to include native document downloading and editing with the integration of DataViz's Documents to Go. Users will be able to view and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files directly from their BlackBerry smartphone. To take advantage of these enhancements users will need to update their BlackBerry Enterprise Server to 4.1.5 and BlackBerry device software version to 4.5 or above. RIM will make these new feature enhancements available later in the year."

So, what's "premium" going to cost?

And it seems that this is designed only for BES, although some BIS users have said that they got it working too.

Ahhh, found this in their FAQ:

    4. What are the requirements for using Documents To Go?
In order to install Documents To Go, you must be using an 8700 series, 8100 series (Pearl), 8300 series (Curve) or 8800 series smartphone with BlackBerry Device Software 4.5. In addition, to use Documents To Go to view and edit e-mail attachments, your organization must be running BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) 4.1.5 or an updated version of BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS). If you do not have the latest updates of BES/BIS, you can still use Documents To Go to view and edit files stored locally on your smartphone or on a media card.

You wouldn't be buying what comes with 4.5. You'd be buying 20+ additional features that the Standard Edition (the one that comes with 4.5) doesn't have.

There's a free trial of the Premium Edition if you wanna try it.

Thats not exactly true; you can edit with the Standard Edition (its not view only). Many advanced editing features, however, will require Premium.
