Yeah I have been complaining about this on the 8220 for a little while... It is very annoying! If I am looking at a list of device forums on pinstack for example, it renders fine. It seems to only be when I actually want to view the thread... Same for you Archer or Cherri?

Using a the "User Agent Switcher" extension in Firefox, I'm able to pretend that I'm a BB when I view the page. Interestingly, I appear to get the same stylesheet.

From what I can tell, this would mean that the BB browser is indeed not displaying font sizes 10 - 14 correctly.

Now... with that said. There are a lot of issues here. These aren't exactly the easiest pages to render. In fact, this is a whole pile of embedded tables which make up each and every one of these post pages. I won't go into my opinion of embedded tables and such with regards to web design, but lets just say it's pretty easy for a browser to render them incorrectly.

Couple that with a somewhat complex stylesheet and it's no small feat to make the pages look good.

This whole issue goes back to the idea that RIM really needs to give up their current browser and make something more compatible. Something that follows the current web standards.

Here's hoping they fix this! It's a major hurdle for anyone looking to browse a lot on their phone since Archer reports it's not just the stacks!

EDIT: Sort of a duplicate post. Didn't realize the other one went through...

Assuming there's no JavaScript behind the scenes, it appears the mobile version of these pages is still requesting 10 - 14 pt fonts.

What this means is that the RIM browser is simply not capable of displaying them nicely when zoomed out, and the way they've implemented zooming, you have to scroll too much. What's more, it doesn't appear to work in Column Mode which makes me even more confused.

It should be noted that this page is comprised of tons of nested tables. Now I won't get into my feelings on such coding, but between them, and the relatively large stylesheet, it actually isn't shocking that the browser chokes.

It all goes back to what I've been saying for a while. RIM needs to invest some good money into making their browser more usable and capable with current web standards.

It's a shame! The Bold looks like a cool device, but this is just one more strike against it! I need to be able to view my forums - especially the Stacks!

Actually I am enjoying my pinstack with bold. I get better viewing than my 8800. Even when its zoomed way out I can still read the font. But better viewing requires a zoom in which I do not mind at all mind you.

So no complains from me... its all good.

The ridiculous rendering from that browser, accompanied by the battery life and build quality, caused me to sell my Bold after a day of use.

Yes, precisely. It all renders fine until I view the thread. At that point it simply becomes impossibly small, and when using the zoom feature its just too much. One cannot see enough to make sense out of it. Unless you go so slow that you spend in excess of 30 minutes viewing the thread. Responding is exasperating enough to make one want to just quit.

What a sad commentary, that both RIM & AT&T would find this acceptable.

That said, I would ask each and every one of you Bold owners to post here as I do know as fact, that PinStack is monitored by RIM, it's about the only tool we have to reach them. My emails to a variety of RIM execs have not been returned.

As you direct this to bold owners, I would also remind all that this is not just a Bold issue but appears to be an issue with the browser built in to the new 4.6 Operating System.

Yes, thank you GaryF for bringing that to my attention, as it's true.

This is an issue with Operating System 4.6.

So to all of you running OS 4.6 on any BlackBerry please report in here.

Thanks
Archer

mjwood, thanks for your effort. Is there any possibility that the browser on the blackberry is trying to make the page too wide? If I look at the same thing on the computer and then the browser, there is more on a single line of a post on the blackberry even when I maximize the screen on the computer. Could it be something to do with the way tables are and the blackberry always showing pags full screen? Just curious.

Perhaps we can have the Administrators look into this proble. Perhaps they can make a mobile version of PS for the 88xx series, the Bold and all future OS. (I don't know if this problem exists with the Storm though.) ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

My suspicion is that nothing in the browser has changed with regards to rendering on os 4.6. From my understanding, the Bold screen has a much higher resolution than the curve.

From the RIM site, the bold is 480 x 320. Contrast this with the 320 x 240 resolution of the Curve 83xx series. Since the displays are about the same physical size, all this means is that the pixel density increased by 1.5X making everything that much smaller.

What really needs to be done is to update the browser to render to a set physical size on the screen instead of a pixel size. Or... allow the user to change the font size.

Got my Bold yesterday and here's my input on the topic:

I wil admit at first that I was a little startled by the way the 4.6/Bold's browser renders some pages, but in all honesty I actually prefer it. This is going to be largely dependant on the individual however, I have outstanding vision and have literally no issues reading anything on Pinstack or any other site when the browser is zoomed out in page view. If I really want a better look at the page I don't find it akward at all o have to zoom in momentarily. While I agree that the font size in page mode (when zoomed outy is on the small side, I'd much rather have things the way they are then be forced to view everything in mobile or column view.

Again, this is all personal preference...I agree that the font sizes should be larger when zoomed out, but I have absolutely no issues with the way it is.

That's great feedback for those having issues.

I really think that the ultimate fix would be allowing users to set minimum font sizes for pages. This may make some pages look goofy, but for those who find the font too small, it will at least give them a way to make it functional.

Here is PS on the 8220 browser. You would have to have some pretty good vision to read this...

Approx actual size....
