bump - that is a problem i have had recently as well!!
I was sitting at my desk at work the other day and had to dial an 888 number...but one with words instead of numbers (you know like 1-800-safe-auto or something).
Anyway, I started dialing and put in the letters as I normally would while typing a message...then I realized that the letters don't correspond correclty to the numbers like on a regular phone.
I had to find a normal phone and figure out what the numbers are to dial.
Anyone know a way around this so you can dial the actual letters and they correspond to the correct number?

LOL, the only way I know is that I made a cheat sheet up from a normal phone:
1= none
2= abc
3= def
4= ghi
5= jkl
6= mno
7= prs
8= tuv
9= wxy

Damn those phone directorys anyways lol
It's easy! You just hold the shift key and use the multi-tap method to get the letter you want. For example, to dial 1-800-safe-auto, you would punch in 1800 as usual, then hold the shift key and hit the "as" key twice. Then, while you continue to hold the shift key, once it displays the s, hit the same key once to display the a. Still holding the shift key, hit the "df" key twice for the f, etc. The BlackBerry makes the translation between the letter and what it would be on a standard phone keypad.

Exactly, the BB will figure out everything for you.
thanks for the tip, that is very cool!

This will also work after you've dialed.
In the situation where you must "spell" something with your keypad (a name or a postal code), hold down the ALT key while typing the letters required and the BB will dial the appropriate DTMF for the letter being pressed.
thanks for the tips...i had a feeling that BB couldn't have overlooked a simple thing like this. I guess I was right.
But is there any way to dial letters while on a call? For example, my corporate voice mail system allows me to forward messages to coworkers, but I have to dial by last name. I can't figure out a way to do this on the BB.
Still have to use the Number Keys as you would on a regular phone. THe only Keys that have Touch tones assigned to them are the 1 through 0 keys.

Two posts above yours; just hold down ALT and type in the letters, using multitap.Originally Posted by fungo45

I don't understand what you are trying to say. Are you saying that this doesn't work for you? Yes the only keys that have touchtones assigned directly are the 1 - 0 but, if you dial by letters (Using the ALT + Text) the BB will assign the correct numbers to the letters and dial it correctly.Originally Posted by pda.teck
