I have google maps on my 7130 but is there any kind of gps software that you can download that doesnt require a bluetooth gps navigator, that would work off of the gps locator on the phone and possibly other phones?

There is no GPS receiver built in to the 7130.

You would have to purchase an additional device.

It is a federal mandate that all phones in the US be equipped with GPS. Not all phones have the ability to track and locate, but are merely for 911 emergency calls.

    Don't confuse GPS with triangulation!!

GPS tells you where you are, based upon signal strength received from a network of geosynchronous satellites orbiting the earth in the Clarke belt, ~ 22,000 miles above the earth's surface.

Location based services provided by a wireless carrier are based upon triangulation. The mobile device uses algorythms to assume its own location based upon the strength of signals from at least three mobile towers, in relation to those towers. This information is then sent back to a mapping service which then plots a likely location.

The second has nothing to do with GPS or satellites.

GPS cannot give your location to others without some type of ground based network with which to communicate your coordinates; it is not a bi-directional data stream.

    Re: Gps Software?

A couple of small errors lewis, GPS is not based on signal strength, but on trangulation also. And the Satellites are not in geosynchronous orbit. The reciever calculates it's position based on a time difference between sycnronized time signals from 4 or more Satellites with thier positions known at the instance of time signal transmissions.

But as you said it requires the reciever to calculate it's own position and for location purposes broadcast that position to whoever is trying to track or provide location based services.

    Hope this helps

Thank you RC, I stand humbly corrected. (I like learning.)

But yes, the overall point being made is that there is a difference between GPS and mobile location services.

Although that's not to say that some mobile phones do have GPS receivers which plot location but then send this information over a mobile network.

There seems to be a bit of confusion for many people about how the system works and what it should be called.

Bottom line: if you're relying on a mobile phone for someone to find you: hope that you're still within coverage.
