I have a Nextel 7100i and we have an nextel antenna on the building where i work and no matter where i go i get bad service. Even on a main road or highway bad service. I can go from full bars and send out a call and watch it go to no service. Any ideas on what i can do to fix the connection with my BB.

Having similar problems with an 8800 on tmo.
Try upgrading the OS. If that doesn't work, make 'em send you a new one.

Since the Nextel network is going away in two years my suggestion is to get a phone with a different carrier or to switch to the Sprint side of Sprint-Nextel.

    Re: Bad reception

Yeah, notice how you go to Nextel.com and it takes you to Sprint.com? :-| The problem is that my phone is my (personal) now business phone in which I am a home designer and all of the guys have nextel and if nextel is going down the drain and same as their network then this can be an issue.

...Who am I kidding? Nextels network is migrating so why worry? Though I would like to get that new blackberry by sprint, but I LOVE my two way, BB Messenger and the Opera Browser, plus I have better reception with nextel then I do with Sprint when I had them

The network is migrating - true. You just need to get all new phones to work on the new network. That's why I gave my previous recommendations.

So will the phones still be of use or what? Kinda confused. IU know that the service is migrating (As we speak) but what about the phones we have with Nextel, are they going to be going through these issues forever?

    Re: Bad reception

yeah Sprint has been releasing hybrid phones meaning they work with both iDen and CDMA - iDen for direct connect, and CDMA for phone/web (everything other than direct connect) to migrate customers off the old Nextel network.

they will shut it down in the future (few years) just like AT&T is now doing with TDMA/Analog towers. They have to for several reasons, not cost effective to maintain 2 different systems forever, and they have to move those frequencies because of public safety issues (those 800mhz bands for 1900mhz)

My recommendation for a Sprint BB is an 8703e. Some people like the 8830 which has more features. I've talked to RIM and some CDMA reps and can't get a straight answer on the Pearl or Curve coming to CDMA/Verizon/Sprint.

    Re: Bad reception

I see. I spoke with a specialist who said that the Nextel iDen phones are not going away at all. The Nextel network is half owned by the government because of the use that they have with it and Nextels iDen being a special unit, will not fade off the network at all and still be a used device no matter what happens to the Sprint-Nextel migration.

Anyone beg to differ on this? I am just trying to get this straight because I JUST got the 7100i a few months back and paid in full for it, which was only $184 and I don't want to just move over to Sprint-Nextel when I just got this.

    Thanks.

    Re: Bad reception

not sure if I would trust that person. Sprint/Nextel earlier this year lost a $20 billion contract from the US govt (yes billion) so that HAS to hurt them. Even though that contract wasn't for iDen specifically, I can see the govt pulling the rest of their contracts from Sprint/Nextel easily. Especially when the govt uses BB's more than PTT.

    Re: Bad reception

$20B is a load of cash and I can see your point on the gov't part. Let's hope it's not for the entire network that they pull away from. I am about to work for the government (Matthews, NC Officer) and they were discussing with me a few weeks ago if I had a blackberry and I said yes. They replied that it's good to see that I do because they don't provide them anymore lol.

That's a sad statement to hear. Thanks for the update cliffr, I really appreciate it!
