If they don't have any roaming agreement in Japan there's nothing else to do then wait 'till they have

    Hope this helps

UNLESS it is for a BETA OS, it's at your own risk and I won't support it

I think they even have a different kind of CDMA. That's what I understood. I could be wrong.

I am living in Japan. We have 3 mobile carriers, NTT DoCoMo, au and Softbank (called vodafone JP). NTT DoCoMo and Softbank (vodafone JP) are using 3G (WCDMA = UMTS) netwprk. au is using CDMA2000 1x EV-DO.

Welcome to the Stacks BkerTech...yes, sounds like you will have to wait until VZW gets to Japan or use one of the existing carriers there.

The Vodaphone 8707v supposedly works in Japan, but it is only GPRS in the US.

Verizon operates on the 850 mhz and the 1900 mhz frequencies on the CDMA spectrum. Japan is WCDMA.

the only bb I have found (and just lost) that works in Japan is teh 8707. I travel there regularily and this BB supports 3G - when I land I set wireless to 3G and works fine. I am now in teh market for a new device and intersted in an upgrade - anyone know of BB plans to support 3G on the 88XX phones?

BkerTech Verizon has the new update which unlocks the 8830 to use with any GSM SIM on the BB 8830. If you can you could get a PrePay SIM in Japan to use your 8830.

Hi ElCamino: Thanks. I take that I can go to the VZA store and ask them to unlock the phone for me and get a PrePay SIM to use in Japan?

I think from what I've read when the 8830 is out of the USA, then any SIM will work.

The 8830 will not work in Japan or Korea - Period, even when unlocked. None of the blackberry phones are UMTS 2100 mhz compatible except for the 8707v/h/g. The whole "world phone" part of the 8830 is very misleading - should read, "World Phone - (excluding Japan and Korea)". You will need to buy yourself an 8707 if you want to get BB service...

BkerTech you can actually download the update from Verizon web page and then run the exe file which will update your blackberry and unlock the SIM. Remember to back up so you can restore everything back. Also according to PC Today the BlackBerry 8830 is one of the phones that also works in Japan in the UMTS 2100.

You can't "get it to work" unless you go over there and set up cell towers operating on US CDMA. You need to get (rent) a compatible device.

Odds are that you won't see North American 3G on a non-CDMA BB until the 9xxx series.

Are you really going to take PC Today's word over the manufacturers?
    http://na.blackberry.com/eng/devices...specifications

There's no UMTS 2100 support in the 8830. If it operated on UMTS 2100 that would definitely be a selling point.
