Does the 8830 even have sim slot, as a CDMA phone? must be locked and not able to read the sim card ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

You can not. The simcard feature is locked until you contact Verizon to have it unlocked. And even then I'm not sure since it will not support American carrier's cards.

The 8830 only works in GSM on 900 MHz and 1800 MHz; non-American frequencies. If it detects CDMA it won't even try using the SIM.

I would say put your SIM back into your old phone and go to a Verizon store. They should be able to copy the contacts from your old phone and put them on your BB. To avoid any push-back by the VZW techs I would suggest going when the store is not busy otherwise they may try to avoid doing this for you.
