You would not be able to use any Verizon phone with a TMO or other GSM provider's SIM card.

Basically, I am with t-mobile. If someone were to give me the 8830, it would be useless to me? Unless I wanted to sell it of course.

It would be useless to you unless you signed a contract with Verizon and used their SIM card. I have seen threads and a web site that claim they can unlock the 8830 for a fee, and it isn't cheap. I don't know anyone who has successfully done it. Quote:

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ I'm not really sure but I think that the 8830 is only set up for a gsm signal out of the US. If you're in the states you're going to be on a cdma network. I'm not 100% sure though. |

Everyhing that I have read says you are correct. It does not support the GSM frequencies used in the U.S. Quote:

What's crazy about this is that, the person whom I would be getting this phone from says that its unlocked. Her husband has cingular and supposedly uses this phone. This one that I would be getting is going to be unlocked as well. I don't understand how her husband is using it and he doesn't have Verizon.

Buyer Beware, I can definately tell you it won't work, I was testing an ATT curve at the same time as the 8830 and the sim card from ATT (cingular) was useless. The SIM is the same so forget it, I took the 8830 back anyway it's not that great.

| Re: Question about 8830.
I have seen people claiming that they could unlock the 8830. It does not, however, use the frequencies that Cingular/AT&T use in the US. So it would be impossible to use the phone in the states, even if it is unlocked. Outside of someone outright lying, could he have been using it while in another country? Quote:

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~the only time a sim card works in the 8830 is outside the US as stated in a previous comment. 8830 in states is cdma through Verizon. Could they have an unlocked 8800 through cingular?
