New BB 8830 from Sprint will NOT be sim-unlocked

I sent an email to their corp service as I was thinking ordering a 8830 World Edition.
    Their website states SIM-unlocked.
Here is the response I received from SPRINT/NEXTEL

    [My Qeuestion]
The 8830 is advertised as being "SIM unlocked". This would mean I could buy a SIM card overseas and use it in the phone rather than have to use a SIM provided by SPCS.
My question is: Assuming I will not be using a SPCS SIM, it is assumed I will have to program the call forwarding calls from my Sprint number to my
GSM number before I leave the country. Is that correct? Can I forward my
SPCS calls directly to an overseas number? or do I have to forward (and it will probably be cheaper anyway) forward calls to a local U.S. "call forwarding service number?
Assuming that I would forward calls to a local number, do the minutes uses come out of my regular bucket of minutes or is there an extra charge?

    [Their response]

So if you call their support, will they unlock it?

Well they have not answered to me on this. But their website is clearly stating that 8830 is unlocked...

Their waffling their way out. Each carrier decides whether a device is locked or not -- not the manufacturer. They screwed up and you should make them stick to providing you with an unlocked 8830. Get a screenshot of the site before they change it and backpedal.

Just note that you can't get BB data on prepaid with any carrier. So using a foreign SIM while overseas is only good for voice. Even if you did, only one BIS account can be tied to a PIN and BIS is specific to the carrier. You'd have to delete your Sprint BIS account, set up BIS with the foreign carrier and reverse the process when you got back.

Even if the site did have a misprint they wont honor it, trust me. I have contacted our RIM rep to get the answer. As of right now it is unlocked.

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ Sprint made a boo-boo? No way! Lol!!! On my Treo 700wx box states "Threaded Text Messaging". Found no such thing upon powering up.

make sure to print those out as said above
but also about call forwarding. I would forward the voice mail to CallWave or another one of those free providers before leaving the country. It will only cost you what ever domestic forwarding is, instead of internationally, and they will email you the voice recording as an attachment if you are near a PC overseas.

    Good luck!

Re: New BB 8830 from Sprint will NOT be sim-unlocked

I have the 8830 and thinking it was already unlocked, I brought it with me overseas. It will recognize a foriegn carrier's SIM but, will not take or make calls. So, the thing has been a brick for the last 5 months. I love the service in the states but, I spent a lot of cash on something I couldn't use overseas. Calling Sprint...the people who GUARANTEED me it would work here before I bought it...was useless. Customer service is horrible. I'll deal with Sprint when I get back but, I'm VERY sure I will be switching to another company when my Sprint contract is up.

you are supposed to call customer service i think 24 hours before your trip so they can unlock the sim when you start it up for the first time it comes on the screen

The account needed to be provisioned for international usage. Have you tried to contact Sprint, I know it takes hours on the phone but not 5 months for someone to figure it out.

SIM unlocked should mean I can grab a foreign carrier's SIM, throw it in my 8830 and it should work...right? I shouldn't have to use Sprint's SIM, go through the trouble of provisioning my Sprint account and going from there. The Sprint rep I bought the phone from told me that I could switch SIMs with each country visited... That's not what I got. I have tried to contact Sprint but, hours on a phone from the country I'm in would cost a small fortune. So...the phone has been off for 5 months and counting. No doubt I will contact sprint when I return home and ask them why the phone did not work as advertised overseas.

Do a search in the 8830 manual or in sprint site for international support phone number for the country you're at or the nearest one (request they call you back if you use a land line), in the US it is 888-226-7212 opt 2 my Sprint SIM phone book had a presaved customer support of +1817-698-4199 that connects me for free to Sprint. The phone is sim unlocked, but your account has to be provisioned for international support like cp says, even if technically you don't plan to use the account and the way Sprint goes about it is by activating your original SIM, doesn't cost you anything.
Took me less than five minutes on the phone, they will want to know the SIM card # found under <options-advanced options-SIM card> (your original card has to be installed for the phone to read it) copy it in advance to make it easy to read back.
Keep in mind that your Blackberry service, as is, only works with the original Sprint SIM and the international BB $69. service gives you unlimited data/mail only using that SIM. Throwing in another SIM "disconects" you from your home BB service.
Hope you get it to work, it ~ucks to be paying your bill for five months or longer for a phone that is turned off.
By the way, to the OP, forwarding your calls, Sprint does charge .20c a minute in addition to dipping into your regular minutes.

I'm so close to going home that I'm not going to worry about it. I should have researched the product more instead of letting sprint convince me I could use it a certain way. Thanks for the help though.
