    if the version of the os that is on your computer is the same as the one on your phone, its not gonna do anything. Usually when you get the blinkin red lights like you had the OS needs to be installed. You can definitely update the os to something newer as long as there is one available. If you use one that is not made by verizon for the 8830, you will need to delete the vendor.xml

    Finally got it had to wait 10 min one time and i did have to remove vendor.xml but hope this helps anyone with a 8830 VZW world. Also to those with macs, never do an upgrade when your in Parallels or another VM system because when the phone restarts the host OS picks up the USB first even if its delegated to the VM and so the software thinks its disconnected. Also for people trying to connect to the XP/Vista version of BB Desktop through VM select the usb icon on the toolbar and select Blackberry Device this will stop it from constantly connecting and disconnecting.
