Thought some of you may be interested in seeing an 8830 with the keyboard changed to black--I think it looks good. $5.95 from cnn.cn.

I've got the Sprint 8830, so it came with the black keyboard. The $5.99 or so price for the keyboard is very good. It's nice to know where I can get one should I need to.

    Re: 8830 with Black Keys

I'm not primarily concerned about how a tool looks, more interested in how it functions. Regardless, this looks fine IMO.

I find the silver 8830 keyboard with blue text difficult to see in dim light situations; is this one better? The black KB still has the backlight, correct?

    thx,
    L

I did the mod primarily because I couldn't see the silver/blue keys. The black ones have white background and are probably 50% easier to see.

That's great! I just ordered one too. I also don't mind the silver overall, but the lighting issue is a pain.

    Re: 8830 with Black Keys

    Quick update here.

Just installed the black keys. Super easy following the 8800 disassembly instructions on the BB FAQ. Some comments. First, the screws are T4 or T5, not T6 as described int he FAQ. Home Depot sells a small Torx jewler's-type driver kit made by Husky for about $6 that will do the job.

The plastic pry tool is a gotta-have. Don't even try this without it or you will butcher the side panels.

You do not need to take the unit apart as the keyboard will slide out the bottom once you get the side panels all the way off. (stop at step 3)

My 8830 had the tops of the side panels (screen half) glued on with some two-sided tape, so it was necessary to apply a bit of gentle persuasion to get the panels off. The tape stayed in place and was still sticky; the unit went together just fine.

    Total time: 10 minutes.

And now my old eyes can see the keys!

I installed the black keys, and couldnt get them to function right. For some reason, they keys on the right side of the unit, wouldnt depress as easily.. I double checked the entire assembly and couldnt get the dad blame thing to work. SO, im gonna order another set, and see what happens.. Since you guys had good luck, I ought to try

are these aftermarket keyboards that they sell or are they OEMs? I don't have a problem with the silver and blue but the black/white would be better.

These look to be OEM. Other than the color, I can see no difference between the two.

The keyboard is just a bank of buttons, it doesn't have any electronics. Thus the low price.
