    Is there a way to use the GPs of the 8830 without using the cell towers...so we could use GPS without data transfer and roaming fees when i travel in the USA.

    Not that I am aware of. The GPS feature requires map data and when using either BBMaps, GoogleMaps, or Telenav, and only the portion which is in use is downloaded. As you move, map data is constantly downloaded. There is no way to download complete maps to the BB.

    The GPS signal doesn't use cell service, its the maps that need the download and cell data.

    on the telus website in de FAQ's ....they say taht they use the cell network for positionning....

    Not GPS positioning.

    There is a way to use triangulation to give a rough approximation of your location.

    GPS is an open signal from 28 GPS satellites circling the globe. Paid for by US tax dollars. Free for anyone with a proper receiver to use.
