    BIS and pop email

I been trying to get my BIS account to use pop instead of imap. For some reason it always adds the acocunt as imap first. I try using the settings on the ATT bis site to detect the settings from my outlook but whenever i hit the detect button i either get a activex control error or it won't install the applet. that does Import Control.
Anyone else have this issue ?

This is frustrating since i know pop is faster than imap on BIS.

    Thanks

    Andy

    Hi Andy,

I am trying to follow what you are doing. Are you setting up a new email account on the ATT BIS web site? When you enter your email address and password (all it takes to set up most accounts) what happens?

it defaults to the imap connection. I want to use pop. So i follow a forum advice to use detect my outlook /outlook express setting by downloading the import control but somehow the site has errors and it won' install the activex control so i cna't import the settings from my outlook.

Why the preference of POP3 vs IMAP? IMHO IMAP is a much better and reliable protocol to use.

my understanding is if the imap server isn't gmail it only does a pull every 15 minutes and won;'t get my emails pushed like POP3. I notice i only get emails from my server every 15minutes since it's been using imap and i can't get it to use pop. it's pretty frustrating hen my desktop got the email 10 minutes before i even get it on my berry.

You are correct about the BIS polling overy 15 minutes (with some exceptions for "active conversations") and it does not matter if you are using IMAP or POP.

In order to get "real time" you will need to use gmail, yahoo, or @blackberry accounts.

Actually the default gmail configuration does not use IMAP or POP3 it is an HTTPS connection. Anyways BIS2.5 doesn't have the idle command enabled which would allow for push email. Whether you use pop3 or imap it has a standard polling interval of 15 minutes. If it gets a new email on any poll it will lower this value to every minute until it no longer receives a new email. It will then raise the polling interval.

I find it hard to believe that it was push email as they removed that setting quite some time ago, BIS 2.0 I believe. When exactly did you noticed that the pushed email stopped functioning? BIS now only has push email with a few ISP's Live, and and Gmail to name a few.

i guess it stopped since switched hosting provider from globat.com to hostmonster.com for my website. It could be a coincidence that bis2.5 went live.

Well I guess this is a possiblility. One thing is you would be more likely to get push email if you used imap, so it definetly is best that you keep this setting. The prerequesite of actually achieving push email using BIS would be to ensure that your hosts IMAP server supports the IDLE command and RIM would have to enable this option on BIS which they currently don't do(Or for the majority of hosts anyways).

Yes I'm sorry if you want push email you are going to have to forward to your email to blackberry.net email address and make replies look as if they are coming from your primary account...Then you will have true push email. It isn't working just because you have an incorrect setting, this is just the way it is.
