Lightbulb Tethering in Linux over USB, without making a huge mess

I've finally managed to get my BB to tether in Linux without any hassle. I did this in Ubuntu 8.04, with a 8100 on T-Mobile US and Barry 0.13. First, you'll need to download Barry, which is done from this page. The only packages you need for tethering are libbarry and barry-util. Once you've installed these packages, you'll need to copy the modem scripts I've attached. Due to naming restrictions on the attachments, you'll need to manually remove the .txt from the filename. You need to copy them to their appropriate folders, rename them, and make them readable by using these four commands, from the directory you downloaded the files to:
    Code:
    sudo cp barry-tmobileus.txt /etc/ppp/peers/barry-tmobileus
    sudo cp barry-tmoblieus.chat.txt /etc/chatscripts/barry-tmobileus.chat
    sudo chmod +r /etc/ppp/peers/barry-tmobileus
    sudo chmod +r /etc/chatscripts/barry-tmobileus.chat
Once the files are copied, connecting is as simple as:
    1. Connect your BlackBerry
    2. If you're connected to another network, disconnect
    3. Pop open a terminal, and run the command "pppd call barry-tmobileus"
If you're in Ubuntu, Firefox normally goes into offline mode if NetworkManager (the network icon in the notifier area) isin't connected. In this case, you'll have to manually re-online Firefox by going to File -> Work Offline.
    Disconnecting is just as easy:
    1. Hit Ctrl-C in the terminal
    2. Unhook your BlackBerry
    3. Re-activate your other connection, if you had one
This should work almost exactly the same for any distro Barry has a package for, as well as other Berrys. If you're on another GSM carrier, you should be able to modify the scripts to your APN and auth settings. Barry comes with scripts for Sprint and Verizon (the two CDMA carriers in the US), and you may be able to modify them for Bell, Telus, and other CDMA carriers out there.

Cool post. I'm wap but when I get back to p-c and have a chance, I'm gonna try this out.
Thanks for the instructions. ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

I have an 8100 and whenever I try to load just one website with barry my blackberry does like a half reset. The red light goes on, then the white screen then the desktop comes back and the modem connection is gone. But it's not a typical 5 minute reset. It's weird, but I can't figure out why this is happening. Any advice?

For those who have no luck with barry, I made a new software (just for tethering) called bbtether (Free and Open source).
You can give that a shot: wiki.colar.net/bbtether
Let me know how it goes, Thanks.
