I have a machine that didn't like 8.04, but 7.10 seems to work fine. Above mentioned, installing from a live cd is a very easy way to go, but you don't get a real sense of what just happened. Packages are installed and you get a desktop, but not really sure how you got there. Some will not really care and just want to know "it works" but I'd rather know why. I remember the older Mandrake releases where you just had the blue screen and were selecting options and packages for like 20 minutes. I couldn't even beging to think of how involved a Gentoo install would be. Although, you could get a very much more custom install.

My original (and unsuccessful) Gentoo install lasted a total of 7 days.

However, it is still to remain the fastest, lowest profile installation, stable and yet out of date computer I own in the house.

Ubuntu is a very good one to use for starters. It is pulling a lot of people into linux. But I love Gentoo, man I remember the first time I installed it years ago. It was way dificult, this was one of the first Linux distributions I installed. But as others have suggested try the Live-CD first to make sure hardware works ok, plus it is different from windows so don't get frustrated at first if it looks hard. The Linux comunity is mighty and they are very helpful. I used Linuxquestions.org to help me and they are great.

Awesome, now, get yourself back to single life, quit your job, cancel all your appointments, shut your blinds, have plenty of 7/11 burritos ready and get to tinkering!
