Re: Ive been searching but no luck, ALL GPS apps require data?

That's not correct. not all gps programs require a data connection!

For example the programs from skylab are working without data connection. I am using MobileTracker for tracking my movement and it does not need data at all. The other program of them is called Spot which downloads maps from the internet and plots your location onto them. However, you can also disable this "map download feature" and no data is being requested from the internet, so you will not need a data plan. You can even pre-load maps onto the device first but this 'feature' seems to be very basic and is kind of cryptic to use. I got a map working once.

Well, some carriers deactivate the BlackBerry's internal GPS receiver because they want to sell their own software and navigation "service". If have one of those devices (e.g. from Verizon) you have to pay them some bucks a month. There is no way around.

I hope this helps a bit to clarify the issue

those programs are interesting, but aren't really gps direction programs. all they do is track where you've been, they don't tell you how to get where you want to go.

I'm pretty sure that even if you pay AT&T $10 per month for the Telenav subscription (which is what I am assuming you are referring to at $10 monthly) you will still need a data plan to get the maps routing and traffic info from telenav.

Yes that is correct. You will need a $29.99 data plan and 10 on top of that for TeleNav.

    Hi,

I have tried, and recommend TrekBuddy, it took me a while to install it...I have a short how-to on how to install TrekBuddy which may help and can be found here.

    Regards

I just bought the BBCurve from AT&T and downloaded the Blackberry maps from Blackberry's website. On top of that while using the newest Google Maps it also uses your built in GPS to show your current position and its free. only you have to pay for data plan, which I think is required when buying Blackberry phone at AT&T...
    -------
so no need for TeleNav if you need basic navigation software...

Google Maps is OK if you just want to see a map of the area. But if you really want turn-by-turn voice navigation, TeleNav and MapQuest do a great job.

James - trekbuddy is working thanks to you. (at least, I hope that I have permanently gotten the settings to stick - the sounds came back and I lost my folder settings).

Could anyone be kind enough to explain the tech-talk here: http://www.linuxtechs.net/kruch/tb/f...opic.php?t=833 ???

I found it on James' site (Thank you thank you) but I don't even have a clue what this stuff refers to and would LOVE an atlas of Vancouver, BC for when I'm cruising in there way out of reach of my home data plan provider... The $$ really adds up when I'm roaming...

    Thanks for any feedback.
    Cheers, -m
