Does my GPS work without an internet connection?

I have a Sprint 8830 with built in GPS. I notice that whenever I use the GPS application the internet "status" arrows flash in the upper right hand corner. I am wondering if after the GPS connects to the satellite, if it then accesses the internet to display the map content. Is this the case? If so, would I not be able to use the GPS if I was out of cell/internet range?

Blackberry compatible GPS apps use the data connection to retrieve the Map graphics and other data in order to display it.

    Hope this helps.

Thats what I figured. What would happen if I used the GPS in a non-service area, say, if I was hiking or in some place where GPS would be useful?

Not sure, don't know if there is an app for the Bb that just displays the coordinates and other calculated data that doesn't require map data.

Thats unfortunate. I wonder if there is any way to load a US map on a memory card and have the GPS app use that. As I have my phone on me 99% of the time, having GPS in remote locations (not that I am in places like that often!) would be great.

Using a blue tooth gps reciever should still work the same way as a built in one meaning I think it would still need to access the internet in order to display anything useful. If you buy a gps software package for your phone, then it can possible be used without the internet depending on how the software operates.

try telenav, I'm not sure how much of that is data, how much is on the device, but it's not like Google Maps that it downloads everything as you go as far as i can tell.

Does Google Maps recognize my BB's GPS unit and display content accordingly?

I believe that Telenav stores their maps on their server so you would need a data connection to transfer the information as you are moving. Actually, I think that's the way with all the map software at this time because there are no maps for the microSD card on the BB's.

TeleNav does not work if there is no data connection. Been there, done that, got lost.
