    Question Cellsite GPS Location

    Advertisement

    I'm using the LocationProvider API to get the BlackBerry's location via GPS... obviously autonomous mode won't work indoors, so I tried this to use approximate location via cellsite:

    Code:

    Criteria _Criteria = new Criteria();
    _Criteria.setPreferredPowerConsumption(Criteria.POWER_USAGE_LOW);
    _LocationProvider = LocationProvider.getInstance(_Criteria);
    whenever I use POWER_USAGE_LOW, _LocationProvider returns null. POWER_USAGE_MEDIUM works fine... but doesn't work indoors.

    Any ideas?

    I believe you also have to set:

    Code:
    _Criteria.setHorizontalAccuracy(NO_REQUIREMENT);
    _Criteria.setVerticalAccuracy(NO_REQUIREMENT);
    _Criteria.setCostAllowed(true);
    I got that from this PDF (GPS_and_BlackBerry_Maps_Development_Guide.pdf From BlackBerry).

    Hope that works out, let us know if it does.

    P.S. I was just poking around on RIMs site, this page looks to be very helpful http://na.blackberry.com/eng/develop...kberry_gps.jsp

    Re: Cellsite GPS Location

    Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, they don't work. I've tried...

    Code:
    Criteria _Criteria = new Criteria();
    _Criteria.setHorizontalAccuracy(Criteria.NO_REQUIREMENT);
    _Criteria.setVerticalAccuracy(Criteria.NO_REQUIREMENT);
    _Criteria.setCostAllowed(true);
    _Criteria.setPreferredPowerConsumption(Criteria.POWER_USAGE_LOW);
    LocationProvider _LocationProvider = LocationProvider.getInstance(_Criteria);
    ...and getInstance still returns null. I'm on the AT&T network, btw.

    It looks like Cellsite GPS Location may be blocked for 3rd party apps on AT&T.
    You have to get an account (it's free) to view any of the info, but...

    I haven't gotten my RIM signing key yet to try playing with GPS on my device. Hopefully I'll get it within a few days and I'll try out the GPS.

    Re: Cellsite GPS Location

    Yeah, based on the first link you sent, the Location API is denied for unsigned, 3rd party signed, and AT&T signed... I guess the standards are a bit different for RIM devices, but regardless, no cellsite location

    Let me know if you find anything out once you have your RIM signing key...

    Thanks.
