I too like Google Maps but more for its photo views than mapping.

I use the BB mapping much more as its just a click to view stored addresses and to get directions from one entry to another. Just last night I added a new contact and click click I had directions from their house to mine, how long it took, etc... Just much easier.

Unless I'm mistaken, you need a data plan, as it goes over the BB network to get to those links and to D/L the data to make the maps work. When I signed up, I didn't opt for the data plan and quickly found out you really can't enjoy the BB w/o the data plan. It relies SO HEAVILY on it, that I couldn't even retrieve attachments in msgs sent to me or even use T-Zones on T-Mobile because it would get to T-Zones by going through the BB network.

    Hope this helps.

BlackBerry maps and Google maps are really the same application but with different names. They both do the same functions but it really a user preference to use what is out there.

I use both on a daily basis.

    GPS = Global Position System

You need to have data plan to download google maps, which are small pieces of maps downloaded when needed. You don't get to download the whole US maps because the amount of storage would be enormous.

Whew, there is some confused or wrong information here!

Let me try to clear things up a bit.

BBMaps and Google Maps have some things in common, and some things different.

    In Common:
Both require a data plan to work.
Both require that you be in a location that has data coverage (IE, not in the middle of nowhere).
Neither store maps on your phone, but rather, they download maps from the internet as you move around. They just download what you need for the area you are currently viewing.
Both can find an address that you've typed in.
Both are free to use (with the exception of any data charges, depending on your plan).

    Different
Google maps has satellite view as well as map view.
Google maps can show traffic reports for many cities.
Google maps DOES NOT work with a GPS unit! (not yet, at least)
BBMaps DOES work with your GPS unit!
Google maps can do business lookups (like 411) if you don't know the address.
BBMaps can map from your addressbook without copy/paste.

How much data does each system use? I can't seem to tell how much data the BBMaps uses, since it doesn't inform you, but I would venture that it is slightly less than GoogleMaps. But not too much less. Google Maps in satellite mode definately uses more data.

How much does google maps use? Lets try a test!

I'm going to open google maps, find my parent's house, then generate directions to a restraunt a few miles from my parent's house, follow the directions, zoom in, and look at the restraunt in satellite view. Then we'll see how much data that took.

Ok. Test over! Restraunt in question? "El burrito, 80521" Its delicious, btw.

The total data transfer for the session was 220kB. If I hadn't used satellite mode, it would have been 128kB.

Hopefully that gives you an idea of how much data is required to perform some basic tasks.

    Peace,
    sam

I would like to add to the above that while I use BB maps much more the Google Maps display a little better.

If you have both installed pull up maps for the exact same place like your house or something. The Google Maps looks a little better and shows the street names more clearly.

You need to put your WAP APN into your Options>Advanced Options>TCP setting. What carrier are you on? Tmobile, for instance, is wap.voicestream.com

Then visit http://www.google.com/gmm from your mobile browser.

    Enjoy!

    peace,
    sam
