Nice to know that. I don't think they intended it to work that way as you mentioned but hey, if it works, it works.
I wonder if it does the same on the other wi-fi phones or if that is just something with the BB's.

It DOES use from your bucket of minutes, if you are not subscribed to @home. That is where nights and weekends are relevant.

I am in thailand at the moment and forgot to bring a wifi router! But I did get it to connect to a rogue linksys router. I am with tmo and have @home. However something wierd happened. The red uma bars came up but not the letters. So I went to check the status and it said SOS calls only. Like when you are roaming but do not have the international roaming feature enabled. So now I'm wondering if you have to have international roaming disabled to use it or not. But I also founf out that the international blackberry data plan does not work without the roaming feature enabled. What a conundrum! So now I'm wondering if anyone has ever got all 3 things working at once. UMA, international blackberry service, and international roaming.

Did it just connect? Or did you have to mess with something to get it to work. And are you with the tmo @home service? Mine took a little messing with just to get it to connect to a mobile network after I landed.

Oh I got it to work! I have to do a little coaxing by turning wifi on and off changing the mobile preference to wifi only etc. But eventually I get it to connect. I think the wifi here is just real bad so it times out a bunch or something. Not sure if I get charged yet. But I'm pretty sure I'm not. Thanks for all the help!

Thanks Jeff. T-Mobile Wi-Fi specialist told me her mother has USA T-Mobile service and makes UMA calls from Germany to the USA every day and is not charged roaming. That's encouraging, as for some countries like Russia we are charged $5 per minute roaming!

As stated above, make sure you have the hotspot@home feature or it will use minutes from your bucket and I would set your mobile network option to wifi only just to be on the safe side while out of the country.

i've been overseas for over a week now and haven't tried the uma service yet... fyi, i don't have the h@h service added to my plan. i brought my travel router with me, but haven't had the opportunity to buy an adapter so that i could plug it in. i've been able to connect to the wifi service at various places, but it never changes to uma. data works fine but viigo doesn't work.

It takes a little while to initialize. What I usually do it set it to wifi only. Then when it connects to the wifi I turn off the wifi and turn it back on. That will usually do it. But if not I will keep switching from manual and automatic network select and just keep making the phone try and look for the tmo network. It does take a bit of time for it to initialize. Which why I will only use it if I know I will be there for a bit. On UMA now in thailand and its working.

Hey Jeff you gotta tell us when you get home how/if you've been charged for your calls.

Re: WiFi calls when traveling overseas

mine's set to wifi only at the moment. but i'm assuming the reason why it won't switch to uma is because the routers i'm connecting to have too many connections going on. i'm basically piggy backing on free connections at crowded cafes. this also happens back at my office in the states. i didn't want to receive any calls while i was overseas, so i changed the forwarding option on my bb to forward all calls to voicemail. got a new phone icon with << next to it on my home screen. maybe this also has something to do with it... maybe not.

And yes, all works as if you were in the USA, also receiveing calls.

It's been the best travel technology for me since Slingbox!

    Jeff,

Did you have to update the WTR54, or did it get your curve online right out of the box?

    Thanks,

Well, I disabled all securities (firewalls, etc..), and yeah, it worked out of the box.

That being said, now that I have done Switzerland, Germany, and Hong Kong since Japan, I definitely realize that UMA is also dependent on the internet connection of the hotel - a couple of places took a long time for UMA to connect, and, sometimes, it didn't - but, I should qualify that, this was during a couple of weeks ago, when UMA seemingly had problems due to flooding in Washington, so, I don't know who was to blame.

I was able to connect with no issues from several locations in Argentina back in November. Interestingly, the minutes didn't show up on my bill anywhere (I have hotspots@home). Strange, anyone have that happen?
