    wifi and cell phones

i think the reason alot of cell phones dont include wi-fi is cause cell companys would lose money. if say the bb 8700 had wi-fi i would get it free or real cheap and use that for internet .and just get a regular phone plan .

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ but WiFi still wouldn't connect to the blackberry network. That's only available with a blackberry plan from your provider. You'd be able to browse the web, but youir email wouldn't work.

True. And I know that the number of hotspots are increasing daily. However, most places I go don't have hotspots.

If more phones had wifi, then they would start charging more for plans. Like the $29.99 data plan for the MDA that includes Hot Spot access.

I think that pretty soon they are going to be forced to implement wifi into higher end handsets such as blackberries and treos, etc. It is certainly the #1 feature that I dont have that I wish I had in my device. I am a student and there are many hotspots available on campus. It would be amazing to have wifi to use to surf the web and use for VoIP.

I believe Palm makes the Tungsten W??

But I see the point. With wi-fi at 54 MBps and mobile networks still in kbps, the speed is definitely an issue.

But as has been mentioned, why would a wireless carrier, which relies on you using their paid network, sell phones which could switch from paid to free?

    They would lose money.

    That is why.

big problem for cell companies yes. but i feel that consumers are going to be rapidly switching over to VoIP vs. regular old land line phones. when this happens consumers I am sure would much prefer to have one device that automatically connects to their VoIP line once they step in the house. They would also like to have that line available to them wherever they might be with a wifi connection. It would simply be impractical to have two devices when technology fully supports one device for both lines!

A handset that connected to the landland via wifi and voip automatically when you get home would be amazing. and all other calls forwarded to cell when you are not home. I also think this would be awesome; when someone calls the home/office a screen pops up on your mobile with three options, intercept, let it go to voicemail, or disconnect. Sweeet.

    Re: wifi and cell phones

Would anyone in this thread that wants WiFi on their BB, be willing to pay their provider a monthly premium for that service? To cover the revenue lost due to everyone lowering their minutes on their plan and using VOIP.

    Just my $0.02
