When the wifi indicator is solid Black and White it means you're connected to a wireless network for data communications. When UMA appears next to the WIFI that means you're capable of making voice calls over the wifi network. Sometimes i'll see the wifi black and white but EDGE or GPRS appears which tells me that i can use data services over wifi but will be using the mobile network for voice calls.

Thanks - up until when I left earlier, it would show little red bars net to the wifi, now it's showing as you described - solid black and while WI-FI logo and UMA, followed by a little "antenna" with three (((i))) - something like that.

So, it seems the phone part of the wifi is working. Thanks!

Just takes a while to get all tings straight here.

Finally, just what DO the little red bars mean? As opposed to UMA, of course.

    Thanks!!

Re: The wifi is so slow, anyone come up with a fix?

Ok I've come up with a fix of sorts... turning off java and style sheets makes a HUGE difference for load times! I noticed that most of the time was stuck on requesting scripts and running scripts, so this is a problem that RIM needs to address soon. The downside is you don't have your javascript enabled...

Wow! You're right - that makes a considerable difference.
