Home wifi access without Data Plan
I am planning to buy 8120 from TMO. I am not interested to take data plan.
So my question is can I use my home wifi to browse internet without having any data plan from TMO ?
please help me to answer this.
Hi zoom and welcome to pinstack!
Reportedly yes. I have not personally tried it but I have seen and 8320 with WiFi access without even a SIM card.
Hi Zoom and welcome to the stacks, Yes the Data side of the WIFI will let you browse the net over wife. but not get mail. Unless you visit a web site to see the mail. one thing people run into is the phone by defualt with out gettingthe Service books is set to T-zones Browser, so when you open the browser Hit Menu button,> Options>General Properties>Set the Default browser to WIFI or Hotspot Browser (This changes depending on the OS you are running), next in Browser Config. make sure the browser is set to t the same thing. this should get you going.

It should work. I noticed something interesting the other day on my 8320. I had rebooted but hadn't logged back into my sim card (I have my sim pin active always) but was receiving email. I wasn't able to see them until I logged into my sim but they were already on the device since I have it set up for data on wifi when available.
I'm in the exact same position as zoom1978. I discovered that the BlackBerry browser is the only application that will support WiFi without an active data connection.
From my understanding after speaking with a RIM and Yahoo Rep at the CTIA show, anything that uses TCP settings in a BB device with Wi-Fi will not recognize that the wi-fi connection is there. Since the TCP settings point it to a server on T-Mobile's side that isn't accessible on wi-fi only the software will fail to connect or not even run (as is the case with Yahoo Voice Search which is what brought the question up). Software that has been tested by RIM and approved for RIM server access will recognize the native wi-fi connection and have no issues (normally).
Great support guys. Zoom you should be great. However the data service will enhance your experience with your blackberry device however if you like to use the wifi only for web browsing only you can. Also if you are using t-mobile services you can get email only for 10$ monthly and use the wifi for free. ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~
Read thru lots of the hotspot and wifi post, but still not entirely clear on what I can expect.
I have a data plan, thru TMo.
I dont' have my faves or hotspot.
I dont' get any coverage at home.
I want web and voice services at home.
I don't care if I use calling minutes when at home (via wifi).
If I get a 8320/8120, wifi enabled BB, can I browse the web and make calls.
How does the network know i'm on wifi rather than tower network.
If you get and 8120 or 8320 and have a WiFi router in your home you will be able to receive and send phone calls and emails and browse the web. It's sorta like having a tower in your home!
i'm a VZW user with an 8330. i tried changing the default browser but when i select it no options appear... are VZW activated phones programed to access WIFI?
I first subscribed to data plan for 6 months on 8320 and later cancelled it, Configured my 8320 to use WiFi Browser in the settings > Options > Advanced options > Browser. Then it all started working as normal.
GaryF - No, not unless you've added the hotspot support via your cellular provider. (the carrier must support GAN/UMA) - this is the protocol which is used to encapsulate your voice signal over the wifi connection. Your subscription must support this for this to work (and the carrier needs to have the infrastructure in place to support this).
Getting back to the question. Yes, you can use a voice-only sim and a wifi device and use the hotspot browser to browse the internet (like any other system connected to your wifi network). Also, if you have a data plan and use the hotspot browser when at home, it won't use the cell connection for your browsing.
You can't use any of the BB services over wifi unless you actually have BB services on your carrier subscription (if you do, you can access BB over any public or home hotspot - provided they don't block port 443).
No, the 8330 does not have wi-fi in it.

Opera Mini does have a wifi toggle. Never used it since I don't have a wifi BB. You'd have to get the app to try it out.
