ok. so you got yourself an 8320... and you kinda wish it would autoconnect to open networks right? bes encryption is unbeatable and you want wifi wherever you can get it..

Make some new wifi profiles with ssid:

    linksys
    netgear
    default

make them open, with no password.

As per what to call them... I call the profiles "Open".

If you want you can add to this list

Essentially doing this, will have your blackberry autoconnect to any wireless network broadcasting with the ssid's above. If you can think of common ssid's that are open add them to your phone and place them on the bottom of the list of connectivity.

I think I'm going to wait to do this until they get the uma-edge, and vice versa, call handoff tweaked. It needs a lot of work at the moment.

Are there any security risks by doing this? I was using a wifi scanner on my laptop and there is quite a bit of data that the bb transmits and receives. I don't know if the bb is encrypting data (voice or otherwise).

Other default SSID's can be found here: (w)(w)(w).node99.org/projects/waudit/ssid_defaults-1.0.5.txt

Sorry about the format. I can't post links, which is actually a good policy for a forum to have. If anyone else knows of other defaults, please share.

To all your programers out there create a app that will scan for network by itself and notifies you that there is an open network. Windows does this automatically but it doesnt tell you if its open or not. but it would a sweet app and you could make it to auto connect also.. Just my two cents

Like Netstumbler, Kismet, netcat , ethereal... [now wireshark - name stinks, program shines].

A program FOR the Berry?! ? I would have to void my warranty ... nor do I need such an app.

    For now.
