    Configuring a modem in MS Windows for tethering a RIM BlackBerry. (8700c/7130c)

    Modem / Tethering Cingular
    BlackBerry Handheld Software version 3.8
    BlackBerry Handheld Software version 4.0
    BlackBerry Handheld Software version 4.1
    BlackBerry 7290 - BlackBerry 7100g - BlackBerry 8700c -
    BlackBerry 7130c
    Microsoft Windows 2000 Microsoft Windows XP


    To begin... Access Device Manager.
    There are three ways to access Device Manager...

    1. Click Start > Run.
    2. Type devmgmt.msc
    3. Click OK.
    4. "Device Manager" appears.

    OR

    1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
    2. Double Click Systems icon.
    3. For Windows 98 and ME: Click the Device Manager tab.
    For Windows 2000 and XP: Click Hardware tab.
    4. Click Device Manager button.
    5. "Device Manager" appears.

    OR

    1. Click Start > right click My Computer > select Mange.
    2. Select Device Manager.
    3. "Device Manager" appears.
    1. In Device manager Click the + sign next to "Ports" and ensure "RIM Virtual Serial Port" is present.
      NOTE: The name of the RIM port on each computer may vary, remember or write the name of your RIM port down.



    2. Click Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options.
    3. Click the Modem tab.
    4. Highlight "Standard Modem" and click Add.

    5. Install New Modem appears, check "Don't detect my modem, I will select it from a list".
    6. Select Next.



    7. Select Standard Modem Types under Manufacturer, then scroll to bottom of the Models list and select 56,000 bps Modem.
    8. Select Next.



    9. A number of ports will be made available for selection, select the name of the port from step 1.
    10. Select Next.



    11. Select Finish.



    12. Click Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options.
    13. Highlight Standard 56000 bps Modem COM4 and click Properties.



    14. Click Advanced tab.
    15. Enter AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","isp.cingular"
    16. Select OK.



    17. If RIM virtual COM port is missing perform a clean uninstall and reinstall the software.

    a small problem i hope

    1. <LI itxtvisited="1">Select Standard Modem Types under Manufacturer, then scroll to bottom of the Models list and select 56,000 bps Modem.
    2. Select Next.
      actualy step 7 i think. the only options that show on that list for me are parallel and communications link. i beleive its due to my cpy of windows which is valid but according to microsoft is registered for hospital or university use. is there anyway to fix this, or am i finally forced to buy a new copy? (in store this time...)
