I'll second the vote for Pidgin too. It's cross-platform meaning that it will work on Windows, Linux and Mac!

It's been my first choice for a few years now as I like having the same client on all my machines!
    As always, just my opinion...

I'm with conker I prefer pidgin. Very basic fast and simple. No ads or anything like that. I use it for aim, yahoo and google talk.

I find that I really like the Digsby. It also allows you to connect into myspace, facebook, twitter, linkedin and a few other social networks and your email at the same time. So this way you are notified on all fronts...the IM part is very much like JiveTalk so that makes it easier for me because I'm already comfortable with the layout.
Color---it's nothing but a hue of the rainbow...why do people place such importance in it?

Agreed, digsby rocks. Supports all IM protocols, as well as Facebook chat, email inbox checking, and Twitter. Believe its only for windows now but they plan on releasing linux and mac clients.

Why didn't anyone mention Nimbuzz? It's a great all in one both for PC as well as smartphones

I have used a bunch of them. Trillian is good. But Digsby takes the prize as the best overall one to use.
