My friend has a 7100i. She is traveling to Kenya and Tanzania. Her service is Sprint (I think). Will her phone work there, provided her service has coverage there.

Actually I beleive that is a Nextel phone (i=iden?). Sprint and Nextel units do not work outside of North America with the exception of the new 8830 world phone...

If she has nextel she can use her SIM card in a GSM phone and will most likely get some service ( I had Nextel for a while and used the SIM in China with no issues other than a VERY expensive phone bill)
