sorry if it's such a noob question, but i'm a little confused about this. I'm creating a theme and my icons have a black background, but the background for my theme is white. i'd like to remove the black box on the icons, so only the picture itself shows. is this what trancparency is? i'm a little confused. I'm working with dell photo editor, but if anyone can give pointers on any programs, i'd appreciate it. thanks.

First, what format are you using? Don't use jpg. It doesn't support transparent backgrounds use png or if that is unavailable use gif. And you need to have method of creating the transparent background. Don't know about the capabilities of the dell photo editor so can't help you there.

Changing the image to png or gif will solve that problem, good call Rich.

    Re: theme icon background

these are some shots from my first them. the icons are a little sketchy, and i can't find a way to smooth them. the programs i'm using are paint (woot), dell photo editor, and the gimp. I guess i'm done, but if anyone nows how to smooth the icons, that would be cool. they are in .png format and in the photo editor, i have "anti-aliasing" checked. with it unchecked, i didn't notice a difference though.

I'm not sure if it will help but you might try to create your icons using 160 DPI in Gimp. That's what I do in Photoshop for my Icons.
