| Yahoo IM clients that use data (not SMS)?
Veterans are gong to know this, but as a noob I was caught unawares that the T-Mobile OZ version of Yahoo IM uses SMS messaging and not the data connection. As such I ran up a few bucks worth of costs. Lesson learned. What's the best free client for Yahoo Messaging that uses the data connection? Ramble? Thanks, Dan |

Ramble works of a data plan, and not SMS if i'm correct, so yes, that's a good one! Welcome to the stacks! |

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~ I second 'blbeach'. Use the Yahoo! Messenger for BlackBerry. The app is free, uses data (not text), and is made by Yahoo!. |

I also recomment IM+ from Shape Services. Have had it for about a year. One time price, free upgrades for "life". Well worth the $45 or $49 ONE TIME charge for Yahoo, MSN, Google Talk, AOLIM, Translator(?), and ICQ. Excellent product!

~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~I'd recommend im+ as well, worth the cost, it just takes a while to load up (at least it does on my bb).

Thanks guys. I got the blackberry/YIM client, and have verified that it's not generating SMS traffic. I also tried Yak-On but found that it did not do Yahoo. Is it correct that it is impossible to remove the OZ set of IM clients? I have tried and although the process completes, the program is still on the phone. Edit: I actually now think that I -did- remove OZ, but the icon remained in the app list. Then I clicked the icon and my BB downloaded and installed OZ again automatically. This time I'm going to remove the app and then hide the icon. Unfortunately I can't do that at home, because I downloaded the T-mobile "Handheld Software" extension to the Desktop manager, and now although I "see" a lot more software in the Application Loader, it wants to "downgrade" my BB Maps program. I can't get it to take "no action" on the BB maps, it either wants to remove or downgrade. So...I'll have to wait until Monday when I'm back at work using the desktop manager without the T-Mobile add-on bit. Hope that makes sense. |

use the download manager on your desk top to completely remove OZ from your 8100. I'm thinking about doing the same but i really like the MSN client. Its only $14.oo for unlimited text messages from T-mobile so its not that bad given most apps are $20-40 dollars and some with anual fees. Hopefully soon they will release all the clients for free but i dont see T-mobile loosing all that money from Texts from OZ

Yeah, seems I had removed it, but then accidentally re-installed it by clicking on the leftover icon. Now I'm stuck with it for the weekend. No biggie. edit: noob - I just found out how to delete apps from the BB itself, without the desktop software. Last edited by dwc; 09-20-2006 at 11:23 PM. |

So maybe I'm missing something dumb, but are we sure the OZ Messenger on the Pearl uses SMS? I played around with it when I first got the phone for a bit (signed in to two networks, messaged a few people, etc.) and then used #MSG# to see how many text messages I'd used. T-Mobile said 0. my.t-mobile.com backed that up - I didn't use any text messages while playing around with the built-in IM client. Maybe only certain IM networks trigger the use of IM? I tried Yahoo and either AIM or MSN, I believe. |
