    Yes, according to SRA, the makers of Ramble, it uses Data. Some carriers offer free aim, but using SMS messaging. Tmo and ATT do for sure, but for AIM over unlimited data, ramble is the best.(For free i mean)

    Although if you use AIM, Yahoo Messenger, or Windows Live, Jivetalk is a great application, although it costs money. FWIW, i use Ramble, and i have ATT

    NimBuzz is another free alternative that uses data. I use it myself. Ramble is kinda hit or miss most times. NimBuzz can connect to AIM, Yahoo and MSN too. But it zaps the battery, my cavet with NimBuzz.
