Pocket Life has tons of potential (GPS+Social Networking) Not quite ready

Sign up using your PC @ http://pocketlife.com
then download the OTA file at http://mob.pocketlife.com/

Devices supported (supposedly) 81xx, 88xx, 83xx, 90xx, 95xx.

This application looks like it could be really cool if you're into the whole "where are my friends at and here I am so my friends can see me" application.

Usage on a trackball BlackBerry should be pretty standard. However, if you have the Storm, it can be quite tricky...

The only way I am able to navigate within the app is by enabling compatibility mode which cuts the really nice UI in half. Then you have to figure out how to manipulate the suretype keyboard to work correctly.

To sign in the first time, highlight to the field you want to type in, then press your !?123 key to change to numbers. Press the number 2. Enter your credentials > menu key > ok.
Rinse, lather and repeat process to enter the password.

Then to login, then press the QW key.

Once logged in, you can you can use touch controls to sroll up/down, left/right...
or you can use TY for up, BN for down, DF for left, JK for right.
Use the SPACE key to select items, unless you see the OK selection on the QW key.
I haven't gotten a GPS lock, although I am indoors currently, so i'll give it a go in a little bit.

This app uses Microsoft's Virtual Earth for mapping.
(hold !?123 for keyboard lock, then you can use the #1 and #3 for zooming in and out.

BTW, the pic below is a half truth (unless someone else can get this app to work correctly with the Storm in fullscreen mode). I have high hopes for this app and hope the developers work out the bugs.

Thumbs up Storm works fine for me

Hi j llama,

i have a Storm as well and after accepting the slowness of the BB touchscreen, i actually quite enjoy Pocket life. It works in landscape mode fine. the maps are loading slowly at the beginning but then the graphics are quite impressive with the large screen (especially MS VE hybrid).

I did not do anything special I think - it was all quite intuitive
*I accepted all the 'changes of permissions' after downloading the app from mob.pocketlife.com.
*Then I logged in with my user name and pwd (which I created earlier on the web)
*Then it pulled down all the contact/profile/pulse info from the server (which took a minute or so)
*Once this all was completed I could browse in landscape/full screen mode fine through all the four sections.

Only stumbling block was taking photos - for taking photos I had to allow the 'record media' in the applications permissions menu

It is quite funny to see your friends move around on the map - it is not completely smooth, i think, but every other minute or so their location updates (if they allow you to see them on the map). Now I just need more friends to sign up to the service.

i suggested this to my son who is in college. i thought it would be pretty cool. he said,"no thanks. it's kinda creepy....like big brother or something".

Question Storm 95xx variant support?

I further checked your issue with another friend of mine in the US who i wanted to invite to Pocket Life.

he had a similar issue with his new storm device.

So then we wrote an email to the Pocket life support guys and they said for now they support only the 9500 vodafone variant for the full touch application. however as soon as they implement some sort of 'user agent' for the other variants they will post those versions onto their mob.pocketlife.com site.

they said this will happen in the next days.

do you know what they mean with user agents? and how many variants are actually out there. 9500, 9510? 9520? 9530?

Currently there are two 95xx models (9500 and 9530). The 9520 will launch soon in Canada.

Thanks for the info on the touch screen controls hblanken!

Also, I was able to get a GPS lock once outside.

Lightbulb New US Verizon Storm version on mob.pocketlife.com

I just got this from the support guys at Pocket Life :

"We have uploaded a US Verizon Storm 9530 version to our wap site. Your device should now be automatically recognised and a custom Storm application build can then be downloaded to your device. We are still going through testing but would be delighted to receive your feedback on your experience with this latest application build. The feedback we got for our 9500 Vodafone Storm version has been very positive so far, so please let us know how you now enjoy the product on your Verizon 9530."

As mentioned above, I am not in the US, so cannot provide too much feedback - maybe one of you can help via this thread. I can forward this then to feedback@pocketlife.com or you can do it directly.

Again - the Vodafone 9500 build is pretty slick (given the still existing BB firmware contraints). Just discovered the worldwide Google local search integration, nice!

So how many Storm users are using this? because none of my friends have storms and i think it would be a lil odd to...like, have all you storm users on there and just follow where youre going through a map haha. Kinda creepy dont you think?
