First heard about this here (thread by penpower)
    http://blackberryforums.pinstack.com...ad.php?t=78542

(figured this thing needed its own thread)

    then saw this http://www.berryreview.com/2008/07/0...-5mb-of-space/

They claim it frees up to 5MB of memory on your BlackBerry no matter what the type! Not only it releases memory, you will also feel slight increase in response time. MaxMem will remove apps, themes, and files in your BlackBerry that you don’t use.
It does remove Voice Dialing, Push to talk, and quite a few other pesky applications. For now I cannot confirm these claims of freeing 5 megabytes of memory but Gareth is working on testing out MaxMem.
NOTE: Please backup your BlackBerry before trying this application!!!
You can download it OTA from www.berrycoder.com
Installation and description are after the jump!

    1. Head to www.berrycoder.com or click at this
    Link www.berrycoder.com/maxmem.jad
    2. Install the application MaxMem to your BlackBerry
    3. Click on the MaxMem Elephant icon after you backup your BlackBerry database
    4. Choose from below tools
    5. Answer yes only if you have back up your data
    6. Answer yes only if you understand that BerryCoder will not be hold accountable for any error done by the use of MaxMem.
    7. Answer yes only if you are sure that you want to delete the cod (it will ask for authorization for every cod)
    Removed Applications:
    - Remove VAD (Voice Activation Dialing)
This feature enable BlackBerry to dial using voice.
    - Remove PTT (Push To Talk)
This feature is usually found in AT&T released BlackBerry and can only be used in AT&T network
    - Remove MDS - Don’t remove this if you are a BES user
    - Remove Media
All the media (sample video, wallpaper, etc) that comes from OS default
    - Remove Themes
All themes other than Zen theme will be removed but you get to authorize each theme cod file
    - Remove RIM Internal Tools
Used by RIM to monitor beta OS (Quincy, Battery Log, etc)

    Note
To avoid data loss in case of error, such as accidentally deleted currently used theme, do back up BlackBerry database using Desktop Manager.
Any error on the BlackBerry can be restored using Desktop Manager

    Disclaimer
BerryCoder shall not be held responsible for any data loss.

I will be trying this later AFTER backing up my device

I did this earlier today, on my ATT 8310, gained 3MB from removing PTT and media, they are the only 2 I have done so far. I have noticed a little pickup in speed.

One issue I noticed is that it cleared my icon on my folders I made on the BB apptop... I had a folder for my games, mail accounts, and Junk (stuff I dont use very often but didnt want to trash or hide. So anyway each one had a different Icon, and now they show up as brown boxes lol AND I LOST ALL ICONS so I cant change it to something different lol

Removed Internals, and VAD, have tested all other apps, Vlingo still works, and everything seems ok. Came up with 6MB of space, not sure why the extra.

Didnt do the them clearing because I use one called understated dark - today, with my own backgrounds.

So only problem I found so far, is you loose all the icons for folders

Oh noes!!!! I like my folder icons. I have five folders setup with different colors and icons:
    Diagnostics and Utilities
    Search Tools
    Financial Tools
    Games and Media
    Email Accounts

I don't want to lose the icons. Did you specify to for the program to delete the folder icons somehow?

In my 8130 and my 8330 the folder icons are part of the preloaded pictures .cod file. Deleted the preloaded pics and I no more options for folder icons....just one plain folder style.....

Well if this is the only downside to gaining an additional 5mb or so of memory, that's not so bad.

Gotta try this when I get home tonight.
And yes, the folder icons are part of the preloaded pics. I remember reading this in doing the memory cleaning manually and doing it on my old 8830.

Icons vs 5+MB free ... memory wins! Good find llama!

The only COD's I deleted are below (except PTT since I'm w/ VZW)

    - Remove VAD (Voice Activation Dialing)
This feature enable BlackBerry to dial using voice.
    - Remove PTT (Push To Talk)
This feature is usually found in AT&T released BlackBerry and can only be used in AT&T network
    - Remove MDS - Don’t remove this if you are a BES user
    - Remove RIM Internal Tools
Used by RIM to monitor beta OS (Quincy, Battery Log, etc)

Still have my folder icons, media COD wipes those out, so that's why I didn't touch it. Would be sweet if you could specify which portions of media to dump (such as preloaded ringtones, etc...I have all custom sounds, would probably free up more space if it could be done)

One thing I just noticed is that if you goto use your DM (add/remove apps), itll want to re-add everything this removed. So keep an eye out for that if youre a big DM user.

Brain fart ... just remembered, you can only use Zen themes now if you deleted all the other types of stock themes. If you want to use today or icon themes dont delete that stock one.
