It only locks your address book like that if you tell it to when you set the password. I have mine set to just lock the phone, once I'm in it doesn't ask me everytime I do something.

iridemybike is correct...it asks you when you unlock the phone...but it also asks you if you make any changes to your security settings as well as if you try to access Password Keeper app...other than that you don't use it...but it's nice because you can also lock certain apps...it's all in your options

Isn't there a remote wipe application out there? Lose it, wipe it!

There was one for my Pearl, but it was a bit buggy. I think it was something like MobiLock. Not sure if there is anything for the Storm yet, but I just found this:

    Looks interesting.

no not really dont lose your phone, but lock it. i have mine set to password protect after 1 hour of inactivity. No special program, just what the phone offer. I used to have it set for 10 minutes, or after holster, but it got annoying to unlock it when i use it frequently. If i havent touched it in an hour, that means im pretty busy to remember it or im asleep.

Settings > Options > Security Options > General Settings.

You can enable or disable device passord, Set the max number of attempts before the device completely locks you out, Set the security timeout, Set if you want it to prompt you for the password when you install apps. Set if you want it lock when you put it in the holster, set if you want it to allow outgoing calls while locked. Turn on Content compression. Turn on Content protection and set how strong and if you want to include the address book in being password protected.

But you do have password protect, right? If so, then use it. And set the attempts to at most 10. Its a real assurance. I would also recommend setting the security timeout to 1hr. If the average joe steals/finds your BB they wouldnt even think about checking the security settings to make sure its unlocked.
