How does one even go about designing for the Blackberry!

Well I have downloaded the Blackberry MDS, Blackberry JDE, Netbeans IDE 6.1 and a few other programs in which I am not sure exactly what they do all intending of a great weekend of learning to program but it has been a pain. I am familiar with Visual basic and would like to begin using java due to the small compiling size. However after trying to us the developer lab tutorials I am constantly getting compiling errors even on the Helloworld tutorial..Please tell me there is an easier way or possibly a great FREE tutorial in which I can learn from start to finish how to design apps..I am really looking to make a couple of conversion tools adapted to my biomedical profession and possibly learn how to manipulate the light sensing modality to design an iphone like light sensing while on calls..Thanks ahead of time and sorry for all of the frustration toward this great device.

I would suggest learning Java programming in a more general sense before attempting mobile device development.

You need a pretty strong grasp of the language before you can really program effectively for mobile devices with constrained resources. Plus, the BlackBerry API's are not the most developer friendly for beginners.

I would suggest first learning some simple java programs for the computer first.you don't have to deeply learn the language but just get use to its syntax. Then go for the blackberry tutorials.

Also, once you are ready for the BlackBerry, I found this hello world example my favorite.

I, too, am interested in teaching myself how to program for the BB.
I'd love to follow/shadow you along your journey...

I'm upset there isn't a dedicated programming forum here. Its not nearly the same as making themes.

Check out the Software & Theme Development Forum. It may not be dedicated just for software development, but it is meant for such a purpose as talking about creating BB software, I believe.

You should also get a set of keys from RIM too so you can sign the software. They can get delayed quite a bit sometimes so I'd encourage applying for them before you actually need them ~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~

Do you know approximately how long the delay is?

Normally we've gotten ours in 2-5 business days but the record I have seen was 2 weeks. Note this is only for the 3 RIM provided keys. I'm not not sure how long it took us to get the key for the crypto class.~via BB (wap.pinstack.com)~
