    Question Gmail IMAP support

    Advertisement

    i've been reading a lot about Gmail providing IMAP support for users who use handheld devices to read their mail.

    Does this mean that we will finally be able to delete a mail in the Gmail box on the Blackberry and have the mail deleted even in the online gmail (original) mailbox ?

    Hope i'm clear...

    here is how, but i can almost promise that you arent going to like it... i was so dissatisfied that i not only went back to pop on my berry, but im not using imap on my desktop anymore. having ~19000 emails since i started using gmail back in mid 2004 has created for terribly long synch times when i send/receive... however, gmail 2.0 is coming out (see boy genius report)

    1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail account settings.
    2. Select the 'PersonalEMailSetUp' icon.
    3. Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') but leave the password field blank.
    4. Select 'Next.'
    5. Select 'I will provide the settings to add this email account' and then 'Next.'
    6. Select 'Internet Service Provider Email (POP/IMAP)' and then 'Next.'
    7. Select 'I will provide the settings to add this email account' and then 'Next.'
    8. Enter your Gmail username (including '@gmail.com') as the user name and your password.
    9. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' as the email server and select 'Next.'
    10. Select 'OK.'
    11. Below your newly added email address, select 'Edit.'
    12. Select 'Advanced Settings' at the bottom.
    13. Make sure that the port is set to '993' and 'Use SSL' is set to 'Yes.'
    14. Select 'Save.'

    You can already do this with Gmail and POP.

    The wireless reconciliation functionality allows the Blackberry to delete mail from the Handheld AND the Inbox.
    To activate this go to the Messages icon on the main menu.

    * Click the scroll button to display your messages.
    * Click the scroll button again to bring up the menu.
    * Scroll and select “Options” from this menu. Click the scroll button.

    Under the E-mail Reconciliaton heading are following 3 items:
    * Delete On: Handheld
    * Wireless Reconcile: On
    * Conflicts: Mailbox wins

    Highlight “Delete On:” Click the scroll button to bring up the menu.
    * “Change Option” Should be highlighted. If it is not, scroll to “Change Option” and click the scroll wheel.

    There are 3 options listed. Handheld, Mailbox & Handheld and Prompt.
    * If you select “Handheld” when mail is deleted on the Blackberry it will ONLY be deleted on the Blackberry.
    * If you select Mailbox & Handheld ALL MAIL will be deleted from both the Blackberry AND the Inbox.
    * If you select Prompt you will be prompted with the following every time you attempt to delete an email from the
    Blackberry:
    Delete Message?
    On Mailbox & Handheld
    On Handheld
    Cancel

    Re: Gmail IMAP support

    The reason why I like using IMAP now is that when I read a message on my BB, it shows up as read in my GMail box.

    Good Point Doc. I guess there is at least one advantage to IMAP on a Blackberry afterall.

    Re: Gmail IMAP support

    Can you create and use IMAP folders on Gmail once you Set it up? Do the folders replicate on the Blackberry?

    Thanks in advance.
