The obvious thing i can think of is that BB is faster since its not an app that has to load, and then put in your password if you chose not to save. Also, your gmail registered with bb saves memory rather than having the gmail app in your bb. with the new OS you will be able to view html images and what not through BB also.

You should also take your data plan into consideration.
BB email traffic belongs to your BlackBerry plan, while Gmail app traffic is counted toward your generic data plan.
There are unlimited Blackberry email plans out there, but they don't mean unlimited generic data. Gotta watch out for that.

Personally, I like them coming via BB. Usually faster and I don't have to keep another app running.

I have a Blackberry 8100 Pearl with T-Mobile's unlimited data plan. When I first installed gmail it was lightning fast, then I installed google maps and that also worked fine until I tried to get directions for something. Not only did google maps freeze up but gmail also stopped updating.

Only solution that has worked for me is uninstalling google maps, now gmail is back to normal for me (after a few restarts).

I'd say getting mail through BB is the best option for all the reasons above, and if you're paying for the BB mail service you may as well use it.
