No, you need a data plan for pretty much all IM programs.

Wazzukirk meant that the program itself is free. But it still uses data plans.

Oz messenger are pretty much the only one that I know of that uses sms instead but like someone said, it uses a little data to log in properly.

P.S. Opinion based on limited knowledge so I might be wrong on a point or 2 but I don't think so.

It is better all around to have a data plan. You will get the most out of the blackberry to be sure. And even on the 8100s RIM is starting to make IMs that run on data not SMS, Yahoo was available last time I looked. But I switched to the Curve now and it has DATA only IM clients. But just to give you an Idea of my "feelings" I used the free IMs that came with the Curve for a month and a half. And went and bought a second copy of Jive talk. ( I gave the Pearl to my Wife, So that Jive talk Is still in use) Jive talk is so much more versatile. Just my opinion, but having a Blackberry with out a Data plan is like getting a Sports car with a Pinto engine in it…. It just don’t make no sense

    Re: AIM Help Please

I'm only 15 and I got my Blackberry for free, so yeah why not. The only plans I have on it our my minutes and Unlimited texting, and instant messenging. So, how much would you think it'll cost if i sign on with
Oz messenger ? Like a dollar everytime? I appreciate the quick responses.

Does anyone know where I can get OZ Messenger for CINGULAR/ATT&T ??
